King Residence

On April 1, 2021 the Heritage Calgary board approved the following site to be updated to the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources.

John A. Tweddle Residence

King Residence – 518 7 Avenue NW (Sunnyside)
Year Built: (1912)

Evaluated as a City Wide Historic Resource

The King Residence is not just municipally or provincially significant but has national significance due to its association with long-time residents, the King family, and their connection to early Black settlers in Alberta. It is further associated to siblings, Violet and Theodore King who were both racial equality pioneers and worked to dismantle Black discrimination in Calgary (Person Value – City Wide Significance).

The King Residence also has symbolic value as an early and typical Edwardian-era residence expressive of the working-class community in the Sunnyside community (Symbolic and Style Values – Community Wide Significance).
