Heritage Calgary Recognizes 25th Anniversary Milestone!
March 25, 2025
Heritage Calgary turns 25!
Like the Elbow and the Bow Rivers, heritage is a constant thread that ties all Calgarians together. Heritage is a sandstone building that stands as a landmark for a lifetime, or a river-carved landscape that shapes our home.
In 2025, we recognize the 25th anniversary of Heritage Calgary. We promote Calgary’s rich heritage and foster a sense of belonging through our programs and initiatives and take pride in working with Calgarians to honour the fabric we all belong to.
In 1979, the Heritage Advisory Board (HAB) was formed to advise Calgary City Council on heritage matters. In 1985, the Calgary Municipal Heritage Properties Authority (CMHPA) was established to manage and promote the restoration of heritage buildings owned by the City of Calgary.
In 2000, the CMHPA and HAB were amalgamated to form The Calgary Heritage Authority, the predecessor of Heritage Calgary. In 2015, an executive director was hired, and in 2017 the CHA became a registered charity.
In 2019, the Calgary Heritage Authority rebranded to Heritage Calgary, a charitable Civic Partner of the City of Calgary. We launched the new brand with a new website featuring an embedded map of the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources. The Inventory is the foundation of our mission to embrace and keep space for the stories of this place. It is a comprehensive, interactive database listing historic resources in Calgary, currently encompassing over 950 sites.
