John A. Tweddle Residence

Carlyle Residence – 117 Superior Avenue SW (Scarboro) Year Built: ca. 1915

Evaluated as a Community Historic Resource

Scarboro, known as Sunalta Addition at the time, was owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company who engaged the renowned John Charles Olmsted (1852-1920) in 1909 to design a “Picturesque suburb”. The Carlyle Residence, constructed in ca 1915, is a prominent example of the Olmsted Plan early residences that met and established the dominant character of the street. (Symbolic Value – Community-wide Value)

Between 1922 and 1935 the Carlyle Residence was the home of John M. and Nola B. Erickson, who introduced the Chautauqua Circuit to Canada which sought to bring culture, education, and talent to new and developing lands. (Person Value – City-wide Value)

The Carlyle Residence is an excellent example of a one- and one-half-storey Craftsman-style home distinguished by its moderately pitched, cross-gabled bell-shaped roofline with front and rear gabled-dormers and a prominent full-width, raised front verandah with notable river rock piers. (Style Value – Community-wide Value)
