Inventory Updates: St. Barnabas Church

On December 11, 2020 the Heritage Calgary board approved the following site to be updated to the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources.

Re-evaluated as a City Wide Historic Resource

St. Barnabas Anglican Church, originally built in 1912, is highly valued as the first church built in the Hillhurst neighbourhood and as the continuous sacred space of St. Barnabas Parish Church since 1906 (Symbolic Value – City Wide Significance).

St. Barnabas Anglican Church is also valued for its association with the Riley family, who donated the land and made several generous donations to the congregation through time (People Value –Neighbourhood Wide Significance).

St. Barnabas Anglican Church is further significant for its dramatically layered masonry architecture, including the 1912 square tower integrated into the new 1958 gabled sanctuary (Style Value – City Wide Significance).
